Melky Cabrera and Kevin Newman slugged two-run homers in the Pirates’ 5-1 victory over the Astros in their spring training finale in Houston. The Pirates ended with a 15-and-15 record. They are off today before opening the season tomorrow in Cincinnati.
Manager Clint Hurdle informed pitchers Nick Burdi and Nick Kingham, infielder Kevin Newman and outfielder Pablo Reyes before the final exhibition game in Houston they had made the Opening Day roster.
The Pirates are waiting on whether outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall will be available to start the season before making their final roster decisions. He was struck on the right hand by a pitch Monday. JB Shuck, who hit .372 in spring training, would likely replace Chisenhall if he is not ready.
