Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman, Jr. released the name of the victim of this morning’s fatal crash on Route 422 in Armstrong Township.
Overman announced that 55-year-old Douglas Chris Craig of Shelocta was killed in the accident around 3:54 this morning. Craig was in his 2018 Ford Fiesta driving East on 422 when a box truck driven by an unnamed 26-year-old man from Altoona headed West on that same road crossed the center line and collided head on with Craig’s car about 200 feet East of Cunningham Road. Overman said that Craig was not wearing his seatbelt and the damage from the crash trapped him in the vehicle. Craig had to be extricated by Indiana Fire Association Firefighters.
State police accident reconstruction teams were on the scene earlier this morning, along with firefighters, citizen’s ambulance and the district attorney.
A portion of Route 422 was closed for several hours this morning as crews worked on investigating and clearing the scene. Circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated. Overman said that the cause and manner of death are pending the results of further investigation, including an autopsy.
