Today is the first day that PennDOT will issue RealID driver’s licenses and photo ID’s.
RealID is one of two federally accepted forms of identification that will allow people to get on commercial airplanes or visit a secure federal building. The other form is a valid US Passport. The rules for commercial airlines and federal buildings will go into effect on October 1st, 2020.
RealID is optional for state residents. Several had the opportunity to pre-verify the required documents so that they can apply online for a RealID through the PennDOT website. Those who have not pre-verified can do so now by bringing the following to the local driver’s license center:
- Proof of Identity, such as your original or certified copy of your birth certificate with a raised or embossed seal, or a valid U.S. Passport
- Proof of social security. Your social security card is needed for this.
- Proof of legal name changes, like marriage licenses or court orders issued by a family court
- Two pieces of proof of your current physical address. Your unexpired driver’s license can be one piece of proof, the other can be your vehicle registration or a utility bill.
