The Homer Center Elementary school was evacuated late this morning because of smoke in the building.
According to Jody Rainey, Homer-Center High School Principal, the cause of the smoke was electrical in nature. It was a transformer at the rear of the elementary building near the district office.
The fire department was called and Penelec is fixing the problem, but Rainey wanted to assure the parents that all of the students are safe. They were evacuated to the high school, where they were fed. The students are now back in the building and will be dismissed at the regular time, and parents who pick up students can do so at the normal places. Everything is operating as normal as far as dismissals are concerned for the students, but Rainey expects the phones and internet to be out for both schools for the remainder of the afternoon and possibly into the evening.
