Indiana Borough’s police chief is stepping down after 18 years of service, and Indiana Borough Council last night appointed his replacement.
Last night, borough police chief William Sutton announced his retirement from the Indiana Borough Police Force. Chief Sutton has been in law enforcement for 40 years and the chief of the borough police department since 2001. Sutton has also pulled double duty on occasion, filling in as the borough manager for several years. Sutton said he will miss the relationships he’s formed in his time as the chief.

Taking his place will be Lt. Justin Schawl, who was one of the chief’s first hires. Schawl currently serves as the Special Services Division Lieutenant and recently has been working with the borough’s parking, traffic, communications and administrative responsibilities. In a written statement, Schawl said he was honored to be given the opportunity to take over as the chief, and while he feels he has big shoes to fill, he is committed to championing Indiana borough.
Schawl’s first day is February 1st.
