Advocates for free college education will hold a news conference at today at The Artists Hand in downtown Indiana.
The event is coordinated by IUP Student Power, the IUP chapter of the statewide Pennsylvania Student Power Network. The group is pushing for free college for everyone, regardless of age, income, or other circumstances. One of the speakers will be Susan Boser, an IUP faculty member who is running for Congress in the 15th District. The release for the news conference does not refer to it as a campaign event.
Last spring, State Senator Vincent Hughes of Philadelphia proposed legislation for free tuition and fees for recent high school graduates, for two years at community colleges and for four years at State System of Higher Education schools. There are income limits in the bill…family income would have to be $110,000 or less. Students with family incomes less than $48,000 would also be eligible for assistance with room and board.
The measure also includes provisions for students at the four state-related universities and adult students seeking in-demand skills or industry certifications.
Today’s event at The Artists Hand is at noon.
