Sara Hess Wellen, 94, formerly of Commodore, PA, died Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Moorehead Place in Indiana, PA.
The daughter of the late Paul Franklin Hess and Margaretta Lunger Hess, she was born on January 16, 1924 in Dixonville, PA.
Sara’s entry into formal education began at the Dixonville Grade School. She was a graduate of the Green Twp. High School Class of 1941. Sara furthered her studies by obtaining a B. S. from the Indiana State Teachers College and a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh while achieving numerous certifications.
Her forty year career in the field of education encompassed twenty years as a teacher and twenty years as a guidance counselor. Her first four years of employment began at Elders Ridge High School and then her career moved her back to her home school district for a teaching position at the Green Twp. High School. In 1955, Sara entered the doors of the newly built Purchase Line High School, where she retired in 1986. Sara was a member of the PSEA and the NEA.
Sara was an active member of the Purchase Line United Methodist Church and the former Commodore United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School Class for thirty-five years; served as the church and Sunday School treasurer and played the piano.
She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family. Her hobbies included bowling and being a member of the Good Times Bowlers; swimming; reading; playing cards and attending sporting events.
Sara’s service to her community was recognized in 2001, as she was the first recipient of the PL Red Dragon Foundation Alumni Hall of Fame.
On May 25, 1946, she wed Donald E. Wellen in Winchester, VA and they were married fifty-three years, when he passed away on December 10, 1999.
Sara is survived by her two children: Dennis Wellen and wife, Audrey of Littleton, CO and Paula Davidson and husband, James of Dixonville, PA; her four grandchildren: Bryan Wellen and wife, Alecia; Jeffrey Wellen and wife, Marjorie; Mark Wellen and wife, Kristen and Megan Davidson Rager and husband, Sam and her seven great grandchildren: Shay; Devyn; Whitney; Ashley; Wesley and Daisy Wellen and Lilyana Rager.
Family and friends are invited to attend an 11:30 a.m. graveside service on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, PA. Pastor Raymond Hill will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be forwarded to the Purchase Line United Methodist Church,17107 Rte 286 Hwy East, Commodore, PA 15729 and the Purchase Line Red Dragon Foundation, P. O. Box 95, Commodore, PA 15729.
