Today, as you’ve heard on the national news, the U.S. Senate is set to vote on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to become the next justice of the US Supreme Court.
Kavanaugh has come under close scrutiny after allegations of sexual assault came to the surface, which prompted impassioned testimony from both Kavanaugh’s accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh himself, and an FBI investigation into Kavanaugh.
Pennsylvania’s senators are presenting opposing opinions in statements concerning how they will vote.
Senator Bob Casey, Jr. said that he would vote against confirming Kavanaugh. In a statement, Casey said that Kavanaugh’s record “indicates he would further stack the court in favor of corporate interests to the detriment of workers and the middle class.” And those concerns were heightened by Ford’s testimony.
Senator Pat Toomey said he would support Kavanaugh’s confirmation. In his own statement yesterday, Toomey said Kavanaugh’s “long career of public service displays a remarkable fidelity to the Constitution and understanding of a proper role as a judge.” He added, “As this confirmation process concludes, my sincere hope is that all of my colleagues will seek to do the important work of restoring trust and civility in politics. The advice and consent role of the Senate for nominees would be a good place to start.”
Kavanaugh’s confirmation vote is expected to take place after 4:00 this afternoon.
