It certainly wasn’t pretty, but it was an overtime win for the Penguins in their season opener against the Washington Capitals. Kris Letang scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Penguins clipped the Capitals 7-6. Jake Guentzel also scored twice for the Penguins and Evgeni Malkin contributed a goal and two assists.
The Pens host the Canadiens tomorrow night. It will be a 6 0’clock airtime on 92.5 FM, U92 and the U92 Sportschannel.
Team Notes
– Pittsburgh had 12 different players tally points, with seven players registering multi-point games. Kris Letang (2G-1A) and Evgeni Malkin (1G-2A) led the way with three points each.
– The Penguins improved to 24-20-7 in season openers and 27-14-10 in home openers.
– Last night’s game was the Penguins third straight home opener to go to overtime.
– Pittsburgh is 6-0 all-time against Washington in season openers and 5-0 all-time in home openers against Washington.
– Pittsburgh’s seven goals were its most in a season opener since scoring eight over Toronto on October 7, 1995 (8-3).
Player Notes
– Kris Letang’s two goals and an assist give him 440 career points, tying Paul Coffey’s franchise record for points by a defenseman.
– Jake Guentzel scored twice, giving him multiple points in the home opener each of the past two years. Guentzel had two assists in last year’s home opener against St. Louis.
– Jamie Oleksiak opened the season with the Penguins’ first goal.
– Brian Dumoulin’s pair of assists this evening gave him his fourth career multi-point game.
