Indiana School District has announced that a modified lockdown was in place this morning at one of its elementary schools.
In a statement released on their website and Facebook pages, Indiana School District Superintendent Michael Vukovich said around 8:40 this morning, they received information from a parent about a suspicious person at Eisenhower Elementary School. While there was no immediate danger, the district contacted the Indiana Borough Police to assist. During the investigation, the school was placed on modified lockdown.
Police say that the person, 32-year-old Brandon McKelvey of Indiana, was hiding behind several parked vehicles, and when police got there, he tried to flee on foot. Police found McKelvey about a half-block away from the school, trying to hide in some shrubbery. While he was detained, McKelvey continued to cause a disturbance by shouting profanities. He was found to be in possession of a controlled substance and some drug paraphernalia, but police are not saying which drug he was found with.
Both police and the school district said there was no threat to the school or its students, teachers or staff. They also thanked the witness for their vigilance and immediate reporting of the suspicious activity.
