On Friday, the State Department of Education paid a visit to IUP as part of a program that highlights the shortage of teachers in Pennsylvania.
The visit from the Pennsylvania Department of Education Deputy Secretary for Post-Secondary and Higher Education Noe Ortega focused on IUP students who are majoring in education. IUP was a recent recipient of $578,038 as part of $2 million in grants to eight universities to implement year-long residency programs for teachers and principals. IUP has been able to use the money to implement and expand the teacher residency programs at the baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate levels.
The ultimate goal of the grant program is to increase the number qualified instructors and school leaders serving public schools in the state.
