The Homer-Center school board voted to update a security policy, voted on items involving the hiring of substitutes and coaches, and an annual wage increase for administrative secretaries. The board’s Academic Committee also decided to put on hold discussions to change the format of report cards for the lowest grade levels.
According to board president Michael Bertig, ongoing discussions to change report cards for kindergarten through 2nd grade from a letter grade system to a standards-based system may be revisited for next school year:
“Instead of specific grades, you’d have standards listed, and whether they’re meeting the standards. And we’ve studied other school districts’ report cards, and we do eventually want to move to that, but we just decided to delay at this point in time. Now that the school year’s started we’re going to stick with what we have.”
The board also updated its Armed Safety and Security policy. Superintendent Charles Koren explains the changes:
“To ensure that we have a refreshed Armed Safety and Security, since now we have full-time [officers]. We had part-time before, now we have full-time.”
The board also voted on a list of new substitutes, a volunteer girls’ basketball coach, and several volunteer boys’ basketball coaches. A 2.25% annual wage increase for the Administrative Secretaries was approved for 2018-2019.
Lastly, 6th grader Oshen Maratita and 10th grader Ryan Sardone received Wildcat Recognition Awards, and Kristina Andrei is the Kiwanis Senior of the Month. Congratulations!
