The Steelers are in a bit of trouble, even if they have only played two games. The Steelers gave away what should have been an easy win in Cleveland. They were simply outplayed in the home opener by a very good Kansas City team, who torched the Black and Gold for 42 points. On the positive side, the Steelers scored 37 points, which should be good enough to win any game in the NFL. On the negative side, the Steelers couldn’t stop Patrick Mahomes and his corps of weapons. We all knew the Steelers needed to improve on the defensive side of the ball this year if they were going to be a Super Bowl contender. I doubt anyone thought the Steelers would be so bad defensively. They have some major problems on D. I’m not sure they can be fixed.
* I never thought the Steelers would have problems with their kicker Chris Boswell. He was money in the bank last year, but has really struggled to open the season. He missed a game winning kick in Cleveland, and then missed a field goal and extra point against the Chiefs. I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but he needs to return to form as the Steelers try to dig out of their 0-1-1 hole.
* There were six defensive backs taken ahead of Artie Burns in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft. I’m now wondering if the Steelers reached when they took Burns out of Miami. He may soon be called Artie Burned after watching him get beaten time and time again. Burns looks lost in coverage and teams are picking on him. I hope he doesn’t end up being a bust, but right now I’m wondering if he just might be.
* Antonio Brown’s act of yelling at his coaches is getting really old. Now it’s time for someone on his team to step up and tell him to knock it off, because it’s obvious to me that head coach Mike Tomlin will never tell him that. AB is a great player, but he’s also a selfish diva. He needs to grow up and shut up!
* How many of us had the Steelers winning easily at Tampa Bay next Monday night with Bucs’ quarterback Jameis Winston out due to a suspension? I certainly did. The Steelers will instead face journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has thrown for more than 800 yards in the Bucs’ two victories. It’s not a stretch to say this is a must win game for the Steelers. It won’t be easy.
* IUP is rolling, which is no surprise. Lenny Williams had another huge day in the Crimson Hawks’ win at Lock Haven. This team might be even better than last year’s team, which is saying something. It’s going to take a heck of a team to beat IUP.
* Penn State won big over Kent State, which was no surprise. We keep hearing about all the young playmakers the Nittany Lions have on their roster. Those young kids have really emerged in the last two wins. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so much talent at Penn
State. The Lions have a short week with their game at Illinois on Friday night. Then it’s back home for the White Out showdown against Ohio State.
* Pitt opened its ACC schedule with a nice win over Georgia Tech. Pitt raced out to a big lead before holding on for the win. Stopping Tech’s option attack isn’t easy. The Panthers did a good job keeping the Jackets in check. Nice way to open ACC play.
* Floyd Mayweather says he’s going to come out of retirement to fight Manny Pacquiao again. Sadly, millions will be dumb enough to pay to watch it. After their last debacle, I don’t know why anyone would pay to watch these two go at it. I wouldn’t watch it if you paid me.
