Marion Center’s W.A. McCreery Elementary School has been the latest in the area to deal with a mold issue in its building, and they have announced that school will be closed at least one more day.
Both the W.A. McCreery and the Rayne Elementary Schools have been closed since September 10th. On the afternoon of the 7th, officials discovered that high humidity levels at W.A. McCreery led to an issue with an overabundance of non-toxic mold spores that tested above normal limits on air quality tests. Both elementary schools were closed as cleaning and air purification processes got underway. In a letter sent to district parents, Superintendent Clint Weimer said that once the cleaning process is done, the air quality will be tested again. Because the test could come back with high levels of mold again, a firm opening date cannot be determined. To that end, Weimer said the earliest students would be able to return to class would be on Tuesday, September 18th. That early date would give teachers a day to prepare after the cleaning process.
Weimer also said that when the start date is set, a parents meeting will be held at 6:00 at the school the night before school starts. This will give parents a chance to visit their child’s classroom and review the most recent air quality testing results.
To give teachers a chance to prepare, the open houses scheduled for the Elementary Schools is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The next update is set to come on Sunday night.
