Donald Allison, 95, of Clymer (Taylorsville), PA died Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Rustic Manor Personal Care Home in Rayne Township, Indiana Co., PA.
The son of Harry A. and Helen K. (Barr) Allison, he was born on February 27, 1923 in Indiana, PA.
Don was a graduate of the Green Twp. High School Class of 1941.
A veteran, he served in the US Army from 1948 to 1949 during peace time and again from 1950-1951 as a Corporal during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Indiana, PA.
Don barbered in his father’s barber shop for several years and then continued to work as a barber part-time even after becoming a fulltime dairy farmer. Don operated Allison’s Dairy Farm in Taylorsville for forty-five years, from approximately 1941-1986.
He loved farming and the friendships it created over the years. Don was a member of the Purchase Line Young Farmers; the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau; the Indiana County Extension; the Indiana County Farm Service Agency and held a seat as a state director for the Atlantic Breeders Co-Op based in Lancaster, PA
His community involvement spanned three terms from 1971 into the 1980’s as a member of the Purchase Line School Board. He served as a past president of the school board when the new elementary schools were built in the mid 1970’s. He and his wife, Pat, would travel in their RV to attend the National School Board Conferences held throughout the country.
Don was proud to be an over sixty-five year member of the IOOF, currently belonging to the Rochester Mills, PA lodge. He was the past president of the East Union Presbyterian Cemetery in Taylorsville, PA to which he devoted many hours.
Don married Patricia “Pat” A. (Johnson) Allison on December 23, 1950. They were married over 62 years until she passed away on January 4, 2013.
Don thoroughly loved traveling with his wife all over the United States. They travelled to all fifty states, even pulling their RV camper to Alaska twice. Their excursions also included trips to all the Canadian provinces; seven states in Mexico; Fiji; New Zealand and Australia.
He is survived by his two children: Larry Allison and wife Karen of Clymer (Taylorsville), PA and Jean Trimer and husband Robert of Lebanon, OH; his three grandchildren: Wendy Schrecongost and husband Todd; Kevin Allison and wife Britany and Michelle Malott; his great grandson: Owen Allison; his sister Kay Kauffman of Littleton, CO and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, “Pat” and his sister, Lois (Allison) Reithmiller.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, September 3, 2018 from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, PA, where a 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 with Rev. David J. Hanna officiating. Military honors will be conducted prior to the 10:00 a.m. funeral service by the Clymer American Legion Post 222.
Interment will be at the East Union Presbyterian Cemetery in Taylorsville, PA.
