All one need to do to get an idea of how badly the area is afflicted with drunk drivers is take a look at the typical DUI Criminal Call listings on the Indiana County Court schedule. There are usually four dozen or more DUI defendants on the docket.
Officials hope an awareness event today will keep at least some of those potential future defendants from getting arrested, or worse yet, having a DUI accident. PennDOT will partner with the Indiana County Commissioners, Indiana Borough, the County Sheriff’s office, and state police today to kick off DUI awareness for the Labor Day holiday. They’ll be gathering at 10 AM in front of the county courthouse to plant flags representing the victims of impaired-driver traffic crashes in Indiana County.
PennDOT statistics from past years show that the Labor Day holiday weekend is the third-most common for drunk-driving fatalities, behind only Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.
