The Homer-Center school board appointed a school safety and security coordinator and hired a part time security officer for the district at Thursday night’s meeting.
Homer-Center high school principal Jody Rainey was approved as the district’s school safety and security coordinator. Additionally, Robert Worcester, a retired state police officer, was approved as a security officer. According to Superintendent Charles Koren, the part time position will fill an important gap:
“We never had our instructional days covered, and now we’re going to cover our instructional days.”
Koren said the position will establish and maintain a security presence on the school campus:
“We see that as an added layer to everything, and hopefully it will make us a more safe and secure community.”
In other news, the board approved a resolution urging the PIAA to create separate playoffs for boundary and non-boundary schools across all sports. Board president Michael Bertig said this would benefit students by leveling the playing field on which they compete.
