The Indiana School board heard from representatives on both sides of an issue that has recently come up in the form of online petitions.
While no action was taken last night regarding the petitions for and against changing the Indiana High School “Indians” team name, the board heard from people on both sides of the issue. Among those against changing the team name was Jordan Smith, who graduated earlier this year, and was a student athlete. Smith said that the name was not offensive as it did not portray Native Americans in a negative light.
Also in attendance was Frankie Baumer, who started the petition to change the team name. She said she started the petition because she felt that people were not talking about how the native American imagery was used.
