In a joint release, Representative Dave Reed and Senator Don White yesterday announced state approval of $1.75 million for the Alice Paul House building project in White Township.
The funds are awarded to the county commissioners through the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.
Alice Paul House Executive Director Audia Boyles says the money will not only help them complete construction of the new building, it will also enable them to expand their services, including prevention and awareness programs. The Alice Paul House serves victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, providing emergency shelter for them and their children, as well as counseling, medical, and legal advocacy, and a 24-hour crisis line.
Representative Reed called the Alice Paul House a “lifeline…(that) sometimes stands between victims and further harm.” Senator White said it provides a critical service, “a safe, comfortable, and secure environment” he called “absolutely necessary” to victims to regain their footing and move forward.
Both Reed and White noted that the current Alice Paul House facility is in poor condition, overcrowded, and lacks adequate security measures to protect victims. County Commissioners Chairman Mike Baker says the Alice Paul House is in “serious need” of replacement.
The Alice Paul house has been operating in Indiana County for 37 years.
