As suddenly as it appeared a month ago, the Pirates’ offense is missing again. Kyle Freeland and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Rockies blanked the Pirates 2-0 in Denver. The Bucs’ Joe Musgrove yielded two runs, but just one earned, over seven innings. The Pirates have dropped three straight games.
The Pirates have made yet another trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. A week after dealing for starter Chris Archer from Tampa, the Bucs have acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria in exchange for minor league pitcher Matt Seelinger. Hechavarria is batting .258 on the season with three home runs and 26 RBI. He will join the Pirates today and the Bucs will have to make a roster move, which could mean the end of Sean Rodriguez’s time with the team. Another option is for the Pirates to return Jordan Luplow to Indianapolis.
Jameson Taillon pitches for the Pirates tonight. He’s 8-8 with a 3.74 ERA and will be facing his friend and fellow testicular cancer survivor Chad Bettis, who will return from the disabled list after dealing with a blister on his pitching hand. Bettis is 5-1 with a 5.10 ERA.
You’ll hear the game on WCCS, AM 1160 and 101.1 FM, with the pregame airing at 8:15.
