Two petitions are being circulated online that concern the team name of the Indiana High School Athletic Teams.
One of the petitions is asking the district to drop the “Indians” Moniker and use something else. In a statement on the petition’s webpage, Frankie Baumer says that the district makes money off of t-shirt sales with an Indian-related logo and uses imagery of a chief as the figurehead, and in his opinion, that is cultural appropriation and racist. As of this morning, the petition has 401 signatures.
Another petition is asking for the exact opposite, for the district to keep the “Indians” name. In their statement, Vinnie DiMatteo said that a move to remove the “Indians” name is a move to take away the school’s heritage and pride. This petition now has 1279 signatures as of this morning.
Both petitions can be found on change.org. But we want to hear from you. Our IRMC Poll of the week is asking if you want to see the “Indians” name changed or kept. You can log on to our website to vote on this.
