The founder and former CEO of Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School was sentenced to serve 20 months in prison for an $8 million tax scheme.
According to a media release from the US Attorney’s Office, 63-year-old Nicholas Trombetta of Ohio was charged with diverting the money from the cyber school to for-profit and non-profit entities that he controlled, including a portion that went to a company that was in his sister’s name. Over the course of his criminal activities, Trombetta defrauded the IRS of $437,632 by shifting his income to other people’s tax returns.
During the sentencing hearing, Geoffrey Wood, an special agent in charge with the US Department of Education, said that Trombetta abused his position for personal gains, and “did so at the expense of the very ones he promised to serve…school children.”
After he serves his 20 months in prison, Trombetta will serve an additional three years of supervised release and was ordered by Chief US District Judge Joy Flowers Conti to perform community service upon his release.
