IUP will receive over $578,000 in grants to help efforts to retain teachers.
The grant comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and is part of a program designed to reverse the decline in new teacher graduation rates and retaining new teachers that are at work. This is part of a $2 million grant that is going to three universities. IUP, along with Drexel University in Philadelphia and Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, will receive funds from the Implementation-Expansion Grant awards.
In a news release, Dr. Laura Luetkehans, the Dean of IUP’s College of Education and Communications called the funding “transformational”, while IUP President Michael Driscoll said the selection for the grant money was a testament to the university’s expertise in teacher and principal training.
IUP will use the money to develop and implement a year-long residency program for teachers and to support new teachers in their first three years in the field.
