Today is the start of the two-day quarterly meeting of the State System of Higher Education Board of Governors. Among the topics of discussion at the meetings will be how much tuition will cost this year.
One of the newer members of the board of Governors, House Speaker Mike Turzai, said that he would call for tuition rate freezes at the 14 state-owned universities and four state-related universities. The reason for the freeze would be because of the increase in funding that was a part of Govenror Tom Wolf’s budget that was signed into law. Funding was increased in the Governor’s Budget by 3.3%.
Tuition rates for the last school year were $7,492 for the full year, and a minimum of $11,238 for out-of-state students. Turzai’s opinion is that the increase in funding should make higher education more affordable to Pennsylvanians.
The meetings begin at 4:00 this afternoon with a meeting of the Governance and Leadership committee, and tomorrow morning for the full board. They are being live-streamed on the state system website, www.passhe.edu.
