State Troopers are increasing efforts to make sure that everyone remains safe over the Independence Day Holiday.
Troopers will have increased patrols over the next few days, making sure that motorists are using seatbelts, are driving sober, and driving safely over the holiday. During the last Independence Day driving period, which was July 1st to the 4th last year, 741 crashes were investigated across the state, with 13 fatalities and 259 people injured in those crashes. Of those crashes, alcohol was a factor in 75 total crashes, and the deaths of 4 people, and of the 13 fatal crashes, only one person was wearing a seatbelt.
This year also marks the first year that Pennsylvanians can purchase fireworks like bottle rockets and roman candles legally. People 18 years of age or older are allowed to purchase Class C or Consumer Grade fireworks. State Police remind everyone that fireworks can’t be set off on public or private property without express permission of the property owner, that can’t be discharged from or aimed at a motor vehicle or building, cannot be set off within 150 feet of an occupied structure, and can’t be set off by anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Troopers also advise everyone to check with their local municipalities about fireworks use, as local ordinances may also be in effect.
