Indiana Borough yesterday announced a 33 percent annual increase in sewer rates for its customers. It will be the first increase in sewage treatment rates since 2002, and is scheduled to take effect on September 1st.
The rate increase applies to all customers inside the borough and to those outside the borough who are serviced by the borough. Rates inside borough limits are not subject to approval by the state Public Utility Commission, but those outside borough limits are regulated by the PUC, so the rate increase must be approved by the commission. The borough made that application yesterday.
The new rates will produce $880,920 annually in new revenue. The typical residential customer will see an increase in their monthly bill from $12.57 to $16.72,
Since the 2002 rate increase, Indiana Borough has completed more than $19 million in capital improvements to its sewage system. Borough Manager C. Michael Foote says in a news release that the new revenue will help offset operating and maintenance costs, as well as pay for renewal and replacement expenses for the system’s aging infrastructure.
