The Marion Center school board passed its General Fund budget for the 2018-19 school year, and is moving forward with plans to expand the high school fitness center. The district will also assist in the completion of the W.A. McCreery Elementary PTA Playground project.
The board passed the $24,603,684 budget 7 votes to 1. On a separate motion, the board voted to raise the Real Estate tax rate by 0.0856 mills. The .75% increase will bring the tax rate to a total of 11.0534 mills. This motion passed 6 votes to 2.
However, the board chose not to approve the $6,338,002 ICTC budget.
In other news, the board voted in favor of moving forward with the bidding process for its expansion of the Fitness Center. Superintendent Clint Weimer explained the extent of the expansion:
“There’s just a wall in there that was dividing a maintenance room we had. We are going to eliminate the maintenance room, open that wall up, having a more open space so we can supervise kids better.”
He said also the project has no set timeline:
“We’re going to go step-by-step, and if it goes into the start of the school year, which I assume it will, we can still utilize enough of the space and do micro-construction while we’re in session”
Additionally, the board chose to assist in the completion of the W.A. McCreery Elementary PTA Playground project in the amount of $14,850. The PTA raised approximately $21,000 for the project.
