The Brewers held off a Pirates comeback last night, scoring the first three runs and holding off a rally to nip the Bucs, 3-2. Jameson Taillon surrendered all three Milwaukee runs, lasting only five innings.
The Pirates tried to come back as Jordy Mercer laced an RBI double in the seventh and Starling Marte trimmed the lead to one with a solo-shot in the eighth.
Austin Meadows struck out as a pinch hitter last night to end the Pirates’ 7th inning. It was the second straight game he has not started after fouling a pitch off his foot on Sunday afternoon. Manager Clint Hurdle says Meadows will try again today to get through a full workout before he is put in the starting lineup.
The Bucs have signed three more draft picks, an outfielder taken in the 30th round, and two pitchers selected in the 39th and 40th rounds. Five of the top ten picks still have not signed, the highest of which are pitchers Gunnar Hoglund and Braxton Ashcraft. Hoglund was taken with the supplemental first round choice and Ashcraft was taken in the second round.
Chad Kuhl takes the mound for the series finale tonight against the Brewers’ Brent Suter. First pitch is at 7:05, with airtime on The Voice of Indiana County, WCCS AM 1160 and 101.1 FM at 6:40.
