Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz resigned yesterday, less than two weeks after winning the Stanley Cup. General Manager Brian MacLellan says the team has accepted his resignation after not being able to come to terms on a new contract.
Trotz’s salary got a slight bump to just over $2 million after Washington won the title, but he was looking to get something closer to what other Cup-winning coaches earn. Toronto’s Mike Babcock makes the most at $6.25 million and Chicago’s Joel Quenneville is next at $6 million. Trotz steps down after guiding the Caps to their first championship in franchise history. The 55-year-old currently ranks fifth in NHL history with 762 career wins.
