The White House announced yesterday that President Trump will nominate Indiana’s Christine Toretti as the ambassador to Malta.
The 61-year-old Toretti replaces Kathleen Hill as the U.S. envoy to the island nation of about 437,000 people located south of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. Hill was appointed by President Obama and took over as ambassador in January of 2016.
Toretti served as the Small Business Administration advisor on President Trump’s transition team. She’s been Pennsylvania’s Republican National Committeewoman since 1997.
State GOP Chairman Val DiGiorgio issued a statement congratulating Toretti, who he said has “a vast array of public and private sector experience that prepared her for a role of this magnitude.” He said Trump could not have picked a more qualified person for the ambassadorship.
