At the Indiana County Principals’ track & field championship, Indiana won the boys’ championship, winning 14 of 18 events, while United to the girls’ title. Indiana runner Kendall Branan was named the boys’ Most Outstanding Track Athlete, and discus champ teammate Anthony Bevevino was the Most Outstanding Field Athlete. For the girls, Saltsburg triple jump and long jump winner Jenna Beitel was the Most Outstanding Field Athlete, and United’s Michaela Bracken and Marion Center’s Mackenzie Walker shared the girls’ Most Outstanding Track Athlete honors.
In high school baseball, undefeated Homer Center beat Marion Center, 8-5, and Derry, 10-2, to win its own tournament Saturday. Indiana fell to Freeport, 12-2. In softball, Marion Center beat Homer Center, 13-1.
The Pirates won their fourth straight game Saturday night, beating the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-2. Francisco Cervelli hit a home run and Josh Bell hit a tie-breaking single before Cervelli’s sacrifice fly in the 4th inning. The Bucs will go for the sweep of the Cardinals Sunday afternoon with Nick Kingham making his major league debut on the mound at 1:35. The game can be heard on AM 1160 WCCS and FM 101.1 starting at 12:35 with the pregame show.
The Penguins, with a 1-0 series lead over the Capitals in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal, play game two Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in Washington. The game can be heard on U92.5 FM and online at U92RADIO.com.
The Steelers completed the NFL draft by selecting Penn State safety Marcus Allen, North Carolina State fullback Jaylen Samuels, and Alabama defensive lineman Josh Frazier.
IUP offensive lineman Jerron Searles signed a free agent contract with Kansas City on Saturday. Safety Max Redfield had not signed a free agent deal as of Saturday night.
