Prior to the start of last nights game between the Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pirates Organization celebrated the 100th birthday of longtime usher Phil Coyne. Coyne spent over 80 years as an usher with the Pirates, retiring last year. The organization dedicated the section of PNC Park he worked with a plaque commemorating his years of work. The team itself gave Phil a very nice present: a come-from-behind, extra innings 6-5 win.
The Cards posted 3 runs in the third inning off a Jedd Gyorko home run, followed by a Tommy Pham double to score Kolten Wong, and a Marcel Ozuna single to score Pham. In the 4th, Wong hit a sacrifice fly to score Pham, and in the 5th, Ozuna would hit an RBI single to score Jose Martinez.
The Pirates would respond in the 6th inning with two runs. Gregory Polanco hit a solo home run to right-center field, while Corey Dickerson hit a sac fly to score Starling Marte. In the bottom of the 9th, Dickerson would score as Colin Moran would reach base on a fielder’s error. That would be followed by Jordy Mercer hitting a line-drive double to center that resulted in Pham bobbling the ball. That allowed Chad Kuhl to score and tie the game. In the 11th, Starling Marte hit a line drive single to score David Friese.
The Pirates and Cards play tonight starting at 6:40 on WCCS.
