A vaping device is being blamed for a fire that did some damage to a dormitory room on IUP’s campus.
The Indiana Fire Association reports that they were called out to IUP’s Walwork Hall dormitory at 11:22 last night for a reported structure fire. IUP Police were first on the scene and reported smoke in the structure and that the sprinkler system had activated. The sprinkler system was able to suppress the fire before firefighters arrived, limiting the fire damage to the wall and mattress in the dorm room and water damage from the sprinkler itself.

Two fire crews, including five IUP students who serve as firefighters and live at the Indiana West Substation, and assisted with ventilation and controlling the sprinkler until it could be shut off.
Two female students were in the room at the time. There were no reported injuries, and the two students have been relocated to another dorm while cleanup is taking place. Students were evacuated and got back in their rooms around 1:30 this morning.
