With the Primary Election just weeks away, there is an event this evening at IUP that looks a bit further down the campaign road. It’s a panel discussion on redistricting, an issue which is reshaping the nation’s governance, with Pennsylvania at the center of the storm.
Titled “On the Wrong Side of the Tracks: The Need for Redistricting Reform”, the event tonight aims to – to quote an IUP news release – “update current developments and propose ways to end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania”
On the panel will be Dr. Aleea Perry from IUP’s Political Science Department, Dr. Hilario Molina of the Sociology Department, and William Marx III from Fair Districts PA, a statewide organization that says it is nonpartisan and promotes education and permanent redistricting reform.
In an appearance on Indiana In the Morning on WCCS in February, Sid Reger of Fair Districts PA said the issue is especially important because the Supreme Court decision that affirmed Pennsylvania’s new congressional districts is limited to congressional districts and does not affect state Senate and House districts, and it does not take into account the new districting maps that will be necessary after the 2020 Census.
The discussion tonight at IUP is from 5 to 7 PM in Room 111 at the Humanities and Social Sciences Building.
