Sunday’s sports roundup includes a wrap of high school baseball and softball, the results of Saturday’s Appalachian Invitational, and professional sports.
The Appalachian Invitational featured athletes from the Heritage and WestPAC conferences. United’s Michaela Bracken won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and the high jump. Homer Center’s Sam Cunkelman won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 meter runs.
In high school baseball, West Shamokin beat Ligonier Valley, 7-5 on Saturday. In softball, Indiana beat West Shamokin, 7-3. Marion Center defeated Central Cambria, 7-2, but lost to Penn Cambria, 12-7 in the Penn Cambria Tournament championship game. At the Southern Huntingdon Tournament, Homer Center lost twice, 14-0 to Claysburg-Kimmel, and 14-6 to Grieg.
The Pirates bullpen blew another game Saturday as the Bucs suffered their third straight loss, 6-2 to the Phillies. Michael Feliz grooved a fastball down the middle of the plate that the Phils’ Rhys Hoskins blasted for a three-run homer in the 6th, erasing a 2-0 Pirates’ lead. The two teams conclude their four-game series Sunday in Philly. The game begins at 1:35 and can be heard on WCCS, AM 1160 and FM 101.1.
The Penguins are in Philadelphia as well, set to face the Flyers in Game Six of their Stanley Cup playoff series. The Pens have a 3-2 series lead. Patric Hornqvist returned to practice with the team Saturday after sitting out Friday’s game with an upper body injury. Evgeni Malkin sat out practice.
