When the heating season arrives again this fall, Peoples Gas customers may be receiving a break on their utility bills. The company yesterday asked the state Public Utility Commission for a 3.6 percent decrease in residential customer rates. That’s a $3.6 million cut that would drop the bill for the average residential customer using 83 metered cubic feet of natural gas from $94.99 to $91.60 per month.
Small commercial and industrial customers using 219 metered cubic feet of gas per year would be cut by 4.4 percent, and medium and large commercial or industrial users would see a 4.9 percent cut.
Peoples cites an abundance of natural gas in Western PA and West Virginia because of the Marcellus Shale.
If the PUC approves, the new gas rates would take effect on October 1st.
