The Pirates are off to their best start in over 40 years with a 14-3 win over the Cincinatti Reds last night at PNC Park.
The scoring started in the second inning as Colin Moran hit a double to right field that scored Corey Dickerson. Moran would also score as Jordy Mercer hit is own RBI double. Cincinatti would tie it in the top of the third when Jessie Winkler reached first and advanced to third on an error from Josh Bell. The play scored Luis Castillo, and then Joey Votto hit an RBI Single to center field that scored Billy Hamilton. In the bottom of the third, Colin Moran hit an RBI single to Hamilton in center field that scored Dickerson.
The sixth was when the Pirates broke the game wide open. It started with a Josh Harrison RBI Single to center field that scored Moran. Starling Marte followed it up with a line drive to right field that scored Harrison, Mercer and Gregory Polanco. Dickerson would follow with a two-run RBI hit that scored Marte and Josh Bell, but Dickerson was called out as he tried to stretch the hit to a triple.
The seventh was also a fruitful inning for the Bucs offense as Harrison would hit an RBI single to score Moran, Polanco doubled in David Freese. Starling Marte would reach base on a throwing error and that allowed Polanco to score. The Reds would try to come back in the 9th but only managed one run off a Phillip Irvin single.
The Pirates and Reds play again tonight starting at 6:40 on WCCS.
