State police continue to investigate a suspected pipe bomb left in the yard of a Derry Township, Westmoreland County couple over the weekend.
The device was discovered by Barbara Miller, who lives with her husband, Charles, in the Longview Trailer Park. She was walking their dog when she came upon the pipe, which had two end caps and wires coming from a hole drilled in it. State police spokesman Trooper Stephen Limani says it was filled with a volatile chemical and was capable of exploding had an electrical current traveled through the wires. Because the Troop A bomb squad was on exercise and was unavailable, a bomb squad from State College was summoned. They blew up the bomb in a nearby field.
Limani said the bomb was probably placed on Sunday night or early Monday, and was discovered after the Monday snow melted.
