The attorney for Ray Shetler Jr. has filed a motion asking Westmoreland County Court to waive Shetler’s pre-sentence investigation and proceed to sentencing for his conviction on theft and receiving stolen property charges, related to the shooting death of a Saint Clair Township police officer in 2015.
Shetler was found not guilty of murder in the death of Officer Lloyd Reed Jr., but the jury found him guilty of stealing a pickup truck from a nearby power plant during his escape attempt. He and Reed had exchanged gunfire outside the home of his girlfriend and Reed was hit and killed. In addition to seeking to move forward with the sentencing, Attorney Marc Daffner has also asked for “alternative relief,” which seeks the court’s input on what type of relief Shetler is entitled to in order to avoid or reduce his prison time. Shetler remains jailed at the Westmoreland County Prison, with bond set at $100,000 and sentencing scheduled for ninety days from the February 20th date of the jury’s verdict. “He could be sentenced to as many as seven years in prison.
