The Indiana School Board met last night and several teaching positions that were up for reduction were given a reprieve.
On the agenda for last night’s meeting, five teaching positions were up for elimination through attrition. They included three elementary teaching positions, one elementary gifted teacher and one music teacher position. As part of the motion for the music teacher’s position, two part-time music teachers would be increased to full-time effective next school year.
A motion unanimously passed by the board will instead refer all of those teaching cuts to the academic committee for further review. Board president Walter Schroth said he and the board felt that further discussion was necessary because there are multiple implications could be in play due to those teaching position cuts, and they want to see what the consequences could be.
In other business, the board tabled approving next year’s school district calendar, and approved a motion to direct the policy committee to discuss developing a policy to put guidelines in place to thoroughly examine programs and projects when experts and members of the community provide the board with data or research that contradicts or questions the project under consideration or in use.
