The NCAA women’s basketball Atlantic Regional Tournament begins today, with #3 seed IUP taking on PSAC rival, #6 California. The Crimson Hawks are 26-3 and the Vulcans 24-6, with the two sides having split their season series.
Three of the Vulcans’ six losses came in their last nine games and by an average of 29 points, including a 79-49 pasting by IUP.
IUP’s defense will be a key. The Crimson Hawks rank 5th in Division II scoring defense, giving up only 54.1 points per game. They are also 5th in the nation in scoring margin, outscoring their opponents by 21.1 points per game.
Should they win today, IUP will play the winner of the game between West Chester and Glenville State in the regional semifinal tomorrow at 5 PM.
