A Greensburg couple has made a $1.4 million gift to IUP to further the mission of the IUP Literacy Center.
IUP President Michael Driscoll says the donation by Bill and Judy Scheeren to the College of Education and Communications “reflects their strong belief in the power of education and IUP’s ability to prepare future teachers and serve our community.” Their gift benefits both the literacy center and the Labyrinth Center, which supports students with autism.
The IUP Literacy Center trains graduate students seeking reading specialist certification to work with young people who need assistance with reading and writing.
The Scheerens both serve on the IUP College of Edcuation and Communicatiosn Advancement Council. Bill Scheeren is a 1968 IUP graduate and the retired chairman of the Hempfield Area School District’s library department. Judy Scheeren is a technology professor at Westmoreland County Community College. The IUP Literacy Center will be renamed in their honor.
