Sunday’s Sports Roundup includes a check of IUP basketball, Indiana high school basketball, and the Penguins.
The IUP basketball teams swept a doubleheader from Seton Hill Saturday, but it was a costly victory for the men. Willem Brandwijk hit the front end of a one-on-one from the foul line with 2.5 seconds left to give the men a 65-64 win. Earlier in the second half, Anthony Glover was ejected from the game for his second technical foul, which makes him ineligible for Wednesday’s PSAC playoff game. And guard Dante Lombardi suffered a broken wrist in the game, meaning he will most likely miss Wednesday’s game, too. Lombardi did finish the game yesterday and X-rays afterward showed the fracture. Glover led IUP with 23 points.
The IUP women won, 86-71 after building a 14-point lead at the start of the game but falling behind in the third quarter. Megan Smith scored 28 points and Carolyn Appleby 20 as IUP knocked down twelve 3-pointers.
In high school basketball, the Indiana boys had a big fourth quarter as they scored 29 points in the final frame to beat Uniontown, 75-65 in the WPIAL playoffs. Tommy Arbuckle scored 20 points to lead Indiana, with Carlos Carter adding 19 and Luke Thomas 17.
In the Southwest Regional wrestling tournament at the KCAC Saturday, Blairsville’s Jack Bruce, a junior, qualified for states with a fourth-place finish. Bruce (113) lost in the third-place match to Burrell’s Ian Oswalt. Marion Center senior Charlie Beatty placed second in the 138-pound weight class. He lost by technical fall in the championship bout to St. Joseph’s Caleb Dowling, who also beat Beatty in last week’s District 6 finals.

Bruce beat Eddie Huehn of Carlynton in the opening round Friday.
The Penguins’ rally fell short against Florida Saturday night, as they lost to the Panthers 6-5. The loss ends a six-game winning streak the Pens, who fought back from a 4-1 deficit, but ultimately fell short. Evgeni Malkin scored two goals, while Carl Hagelin, Bryan Rust, and Patric Hornqvist each scored one.
The Penguins return home to play the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. You can hear that game beginning with the pregame show at 6:00 PM on WCCS, AM 1160 and FM 101.1, as U92.5 FM will be airing high school basketball playoffs.
