At their work session last night, Indiana Borough Council heard on the progress of the recent upgrades in the area of borough parking.
Indiana Borough Police Lieutenant Justin Schawl gave a presentation on the current state of the parking department, showing off the improvements made with the computer and payment systems at the Parking Garage, lighting at the garage and on Carpenter Avenue, and the recent roll out of a program that allows people to pay for parking using their smart phone. Schawl said that since they started using the PassportParking app program, 142 transactions have been made for Indiana Borough parking. Schawl said that while a lot of improvements have been made, it would be foolish to stop now. He feels that there could still be some cost-saving efforts to be made, and he wants to add some artwork to the Parking Garage, and install a new lighted sign at the garage.
Schawl added that he felt it would be best if there was a person dedicated to just running the parking department so that the department can get the proper attention it needs.
In other business, the borough approved a resolution for a small water and sewer grant. The grant is for $500,000, but the borough needs to commit $75,000 for the grant, which will be used for sewer upgrades.
