The Homer-Center school board discussed the calendar for the 2018-19 school year at Thursday night’s meeting.
Each year, the Indiana County Technology Center develops a common calendar that the county’s member districts can individually adjust to as they see fit. In an open discussion, Homer-Center’s board members, administration, and faculty considered how to construct their own calendar to maximize the time its ICTC students spend at the school. School-year start and end days and holiday break lengths were also considered in an effort to maximize the number of teaching days prior to State testing dates for all students (PSSAs in April, Keystones in May). It was determined that a start date of August 21st, 2018 and an end date of May 30th, 2019 would be optimal, though the schedule is not yet finalized.
Superintendent Koren will present the preliminary schedule, as it is determined so far, to the superintendents of the ICTC next week.
In other business, the board approved a new substitute teacher for science classes, as well as two spare bus drivers for the current year. The 2017-18 calendar was revised for a snow make-up day on March 19th for the February 7th cancellation. And, the board accepted a donation from the Homer City Area Athletic Booster Club that will go toward new basketball rims for the elementary gym, which are expected to be installed next week.
Additionally, Godfree Rodman and Katlyn Hippchen received Wildcat Recognition Awards, and Stephen Plowcha is the Kiwanis Senior of the Month. Congratulations from your hometown stations!
