The state yesterday released its annual list of top earners in state government, and it shows that 8,290 people, the highest number ever, took in salaries of more than $100,000 in 2017. That’s 714 more state government employees paid more than 100-grand in 2017 than in 2016.
While the number of people actually employed in executive offices actually dropped, the number of those who remained on state payrolls made more money.
Other findings from the report show that 139 more employees of the State System of Higher Education topped $100,000 in earnings in 2017 than the year before. The highest-paid State System employee was IUP President Michael Driscoll, who earned $315,399, which ranked him 12th among all state government workers.
A physician working for the state Department of Health, Dr. Michael Brogna, was the highest-paid state employee, at almost $413,000.
Among elected officials, the governor’s $180,000 salary is only good for 223rd highest on the list. The highest-paid elected official was State Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Saylor, whose $209,930 salary ranked 102nd.
