Six fire companies were called out to a fire in downtown Indiana this morning that went through the roof of a building that contained a business.
Indiana County 911 reports the initial call went out at 1:42 this morning to the Sun City Tanning location at 952 Philadelphia Street. Indiana Fire Association Assistant Chief Ron Moreau said the fire was first spotted by police officers on patrol this morning. Indiana was initially joined by Homer City and Clymer fire crews, and would later be assisted by fire crews from Cherryhill Township, Blairsville and Blacklick. The County’s hazmat truck was also on the scene. At one point, the fire was seen going through the roof of the building. Assistant Chief Moreau said that the fire started in the upper floors in the rear of the building, and was tough to put out as the building’s walls have multiple layers of insulation and re-finished walls.

Crews are still on the scene checking for hot spots in the building. Philadelphia Street is blocked in the 900 block in both directions, and fire crews are also blocking traffic along Gompers Avenue, which runs behind the building. Indiana Borough’s Public Works Department is also helping out by putting salt on Philadelphia Street and Gompers Avenue.
No word yet on the cause of the fire, but Moreau stated that the State Police Fire Marshals will be called in to investigate.
