Sunday’s sports roundup includes IUP basketball, high school basketball, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The IUP basketball teams swept a doubleheader from Clarion Saturday. The women raced past the Golden Eagles, 87-42. Carolyn Appleby scored 20 points and Brittany Robinson 14 to lead the way. In the men’s game, Anthony Glover scored 20 and Cobo Diaz 15, in a 69-46 win.
In high school basketball, Penns Manor’s girls beat Bishop Guilfoyle, 45-40 as Maddie Weaver scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. The United girls knocked off Shanksville-Stoneycreek, 69-67 in overtime as freshman Maizey Fry dropped in 33 points and Ashley Morgan added 15.
In boys’ play, Carlos Carter scored 34 points and Tommy Arbuckle 18, as Indiana beat Punxsutawney, 79-52. United lost to Westmont Hilltop, 57-40. Luke Means and Nate Fabrizio each scored 13 for the Lions, who host Homer Center on Monday night in a key Heritage Conference South matchup.
The Penguins lost to San Jose, 2-1 Saturday night. Connor Sheary scored the lone Pittsburgh goal. Pens’ goaltender Casey DeSmith made 34 of 36 saves.
