A Greensburg man charged with murdering a University of Pittsburgh student last fall has been ordered to stand trial in Allegheny County Court.
21-year-old Matthew Darby is accused of killing 20-year-old Alina Sheykhet at her apartment on October 8th, then fleeing to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he was captured three days later as he tried to break into a residence.
At a preliminary hearing on Friday, Judge Jeffrey Manning ordered Darby to stand trial on charges of homicide, burglary, flight to avoid apprehension, and related offenses. He also faces charges for rape in a case originating five days before Sheykhet’s murder. And in Indiana County, Darby is awaiting trial for rape, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, and other offenses involving a female IUP student last May.
Last Wednesday, Judge William Martin set May 21st as the date for jury selection in that case, with any motions due by February 23rd, and a motions hearing, if necessary, on March 13th.
