State Police at Greensburg responded to a report of a shooter barricaded in a Youngwood residence shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.
Traffic had been stopped at Third and Fourth streets near the Sunoco convenience store in Youngwood, according to witnesses.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
State police said that Route 119 in Youngwood has been closed in both directions in the vicinity of Youngwood Commons.
Police said the gunman is barricaded inside a building. The incident reportedly is occurring in the 400 block of Fourth Street.
Witnesses said that police stopped traffic along Route 119 northbound into Youngwood and directed them to turn around. Troopers with rifles were seen along the higway and a half a dozen police cars were seen in that area.
Westmoreland County Community College, which is about a mile away from the Sunoco, put out a notice to students that the shooter threat had been contained but that students should avoid the area.
As a result of the police activity, a few Stanwood Elementary Shool bus routes were adjusted for precautionary reasons, according to an alert sent to Stanwood parents. The school is operating on normal schedule.
Police had closed traffic along Route 119 into Youngwood and are asking motorists to avoid traveling in the Youngwood area.
